Research Programme of the Institute of Social Sciences – University of Lisbon
Coordinated by Manuel Villaverde Cabral and Jorge Vala
The research programme Portuguese Social Attitudes (PSA), coordinated by Manuel Villaverde Cabral and Jorge Vala, has been carrying out a systematic and consistent research activity since 1997.
Presently, this research programme encompasses several international projects of comparative and longitudinal research networks, namely:
- International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) (Portuguese version)
- European Values Study (EVS) (Portuguese version)
- European Social Survey (ESS) (Portuguese version)
- Group-Focused Enmity (GFE) (Portuguese version)
The main objectives of this research programme are the following:
- to monitor changing processes on social attitudes and values;
- to promote the development of methodological issues in transnational and comparative studies, namely regarding sampling procedures, construction and validation of instruments, and the use of validity and reliability tests in survey studies;
- to promote free access to a wide infra-structure of knowledge and to contribute to an increasing use of the databases available.

The research programme has been receiving important fundings from the Foundation for Science and Technology, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Luso American Foundation, and also from banking institutions, such as Caixa Geral de Depósitos and Banco Comercial Português, besides the financial support of the Institute of Social Sciences.
